sir,

With reference to your letter of the 14th

ultimo, 270/1901-2, I am directed by the Secretary of

State for War to acquaint you that he concurs in the

proposal to appoint an Officer of Royal Artillery as

Commandant of the Hong Kong Volunteers, and has caused

a telegram to be addressed to Captain C. G. Pritchard

Royal Garrison Artillery, who is at present in Singapore

offering him the appointment.

That Officer has signified his willingness to

accept the post and Mr. Brodrick is therefore ready to

place his services at the disposal of your Department

with a view to his appointment.

I am to ask whether orders shall now be issued

from this Department to Captain Pritchard ordering him

to proceed at once to Hong Kong or whether any time is

likely to elapse before his services are required. I am

also to enquire for what term the appointment would be

held.

Captain Pritchard would, if finally appointed,

be struck off pay from Army Funds and be seconded from

the date of leaving Singapore.

I have the honour to be, sir,

Inder Secretary of State

Colonial Office,

Your obedient Servant,
